Welcome to JTR Jujutsu International we are the only “traditional” (Old-Style Jujutsu) martial art school in Washington DC. This combat-style system originates from the 16th-century battlefields of feudal Japan used by Samurai warriors. Today Jujutsu is practiced worldwide and has evolved into a modern self-defense practice for everyone. Jujutsu is translated to mean “yielding, soft or gentle” since many of the techniques are designed to subdue and control an aggressor. Learn empty-hand techniques like strikes, kicks, throws, joint levers, chokes, ground fighting, weapons, and more. The culture of our martial arts school is friendly, inviting, and supportive. As a community, our members share a passion for learning and strong fellowship.
Japanese close combat forms focused heavily on throwing, immobilizing, joint locks and choking as striking techniques were ineffective towards someone wearing armor on the battlefield. The original styles of jujutsu also extensively taught parrying and counter-attacking long weapons such as swords or spears via a dagger or other small arms. Jujutsu reached its heyday during the 17th Century when weapons were outlawed for citizens by the Japanese military government.
